How to Clean a Velvet Bed Frame: The Complete Care Guide

How to clean a velvet bed frame — deep-pile velvet upholstered headboard

To clean a velvet bed frame: vacuum weekly with a soft brush attachment, blot spills immediately with a dry white cloth, and never rub or soak the fabric. Plush velvet on a bed frame is far easier to maintain than most people expect — the pile just needs a different technique to flat-woven fabric.

The weekly routine

Vacuum the headboard and base on low suction using an upholstery or soft brush head, always moving in the direction of the pile (run your hand over the fabric — the smooth direction is with the pile). This lifts dust before it settles into the base of the fibres, which is what dulls velvet over time.

Dealing with spills

  1. Blot immediately with a dry white cloth or kitchen roll — press, do not wipe.
  2. Work from the outside of the spill inwards to stop it spreading.
  3. If moisture is still present, blot with a barely damp cloth using cold water only.
  4. Let it air dry completely, then brush the pile back into direction with a soft brush.

Coloured cloths can transfer dye into damp velvet — always use white.

Removing pressure marks and crushed pile

Velvet shades where pressure has flattened the pile — leaning against the headboard nightly will do it. This is normal and reversible: hold a steamer or steam iron 15–20cm away (never touching), let the steam relax the fibres for a few seconds, then brush the pile back with a soft brush or your hand.

What never to do

  • Never rub — it permanently crushes and shines the pile.
  • Never soak — water rings on velvet are harder to fix than the original stain.
  • Never use bleach or solvent cleaners unless the manufacturer's care label allows it.
  • Never place in prolonged direct sunlight — velvet fades faster than most upholstery fabrics.

Frequently asked questions

Can you use a steam cleaner on a velvet bed?
Steam held at a distance is safe and useful for lifting crushed pile. Direct contact or saturating steam cleaners are not.
How do you get pet hair off velvet?
A rubber glove or lint roller lifts hair from the pile more effectively than vacuuming alone. More on pet-friendly fabrics: best beds for pet owners.
Does velvet wear out on a bed frame?
Far less than on a sofa — a bed frame sees minimal abrasion. Sunlight fading is the bigger long-term risk.
Is velvet or bouclé easier to care for?
Bouclé hides everyday marks better; velvet responds better to steam correction. Compared fully in velvet vs bouclé.
