How to Clean a Bouclé or Teddy Fabric Bed: Care Guide

To clean a bouclé or teddy fabric bed: vacuum gently on low suction with an upholstery head, blot spills without rubbing, and trim any snagged loop with scissors rather than pulling it. The looped weave that makes bouclé look so good is also the one thing you can damage — and pulling is what damages it.

The regular routine

Vacuum every week or two on low suction with a soft upholstery attachment. Bouclé's texture traps dust in the loops rather than on the surface, so gentle regular vacuuming does more good than occasional deep cleaning. A soft clothes brush lifts surface fluff between vacuums.

Spills and stains

1. Blot immediately with a dry white cloth — press straight down, never wipe across.
2. Work inward from the edge of the spill.
3. If needed, use a barely damp cloth with cold water and blot again.
4. Let it air dry fully; do not apply heat.

Bouclé's advantage here is real: the irregular loop surface hides light everyday marks far better than a flat weave or velvet pile.

Fixing pulled loops

A snagged loop is the one common bouclé issue — usually from a zip, watch strap, or pet claw. Never pull it, which unravels neighbouring loops. Instead, snip the raised loop level with the surrounding surface using small sharp scissors. Done neatly, it is invisible.

What never to do

• Never rub — friction distorts and flattens the loops permanently.
• Never use a stiff brush or beater-bar vacuum head — both pull loops.
• Never soak — dense bouclé holds water and dries slowly.
• Never pull a snag — always trim.
• Keep out of prolonged direct sun — cream bouclé can yellow over years.
