Types of Bed Frames UK: Divan, Ottoman, Upholstered and More

Types of bed frames UK — divan, ottoman and upholstered bed frames compared

UK bed frames fall into five main types: divan, ottoman, upholstered frame, bedstead (wooden or metal) and TV bed — and the difference that matters most day to day is what happens underneath the mattress. Here is what each one actually is, and who it suits.

Divan beds

A fabric-covered solid base topped with a mattress, usually with a separate headboard and optional built-in drawers. Neat, sturdy, and the easiest storage to access. See our drawer configuration guide.

Ottoman beds

A frame whose entire mattress platform lifts on gas struts to reveal storage across the full footprint. The most storage-efficient option in UK bedrooms — explained fully in what is an ottoman bed.

Upholstered frames

Fabric-wrapped frames — velvet, bouclé, linen-look — usually with a slatted base and no built-in storage. Chosen for looks and softness; compare fabrics in velvet vs bouclé.

Bedsteads

Traditional wooden or metal frames with visible legs and a gap beneath. No integrated storage, though boxes fit underneath. Durable and often the cheapest entry point.

TV beds

Frames with an electric television lift built into the footboard plus storage in the frame. Covered fully in our TV bed guide.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between a divan and a bed frame?
A divan has a solid upholstered base the mattress sits on; a bed frame (bedstead) has slats and visible legs with a gap underneath.

Which bed type has the most storage?
An ottoman — the storage spans the entire bed footprint.

Which bed frame type lasts longest?
Solid wooden bedsteads and well-built divan bases both age well; with any type, build quality matters more than category.

Do upholstered beds need special mattresses?
No — any standard UK-size mattress fits, whatever the frame type.
