Divan beds come with two, four or no drawers — and the right choice depends less on how much you own than on which sides of the bed you can actually open. A four-drawer divan is useless against a wall; a two-drawer on the open side beats it every time.

The standard drawer configurations
| Configuration | Layout | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| 2 drawers same side | Both on one long side | Beds against a wall on one side |
| 2 drawers opposite | One each side | Couples wanting their own drawer |
| 4 drawers | Two each side | Rooms with clearance on both sides |
| 2 drawers + continental | Half-length drawers | Rooms where full drawers won't clear |
| No drawers | Solid base | Maximum durability, lowest price |
Check your clearance first
A divan drawer needs its full depth of clear floor to open — typically 45–60cm. Measure from the bed side to the nearest obstruction: wardrobe doors, radiators, the wall, or the swing of the bedroom door. This single check prevents the most common divan regret.
If the clearance isn't there, an ottoman bed is the better answer — it opens upward and needs no side clearance at all.
How much do divan drawers hold?
A standard divan drawer holds roughly 40–60 litres — so two drawers give you around 100 litres, four around 200. That comfortably covers bedding sets, towels and everyday clothes, but it is a fraction of an ottoman base, which spans the full footprint at around 380–520 litres depending on size (see capacity explained).
Drawers vs ottoman storage
The honest trade-off: drawers win on access — one second, one hand, no mattress lifting, which matters for things you use weekly. Ottomans win on volume — three to four times the capacity, and they work in rooms where drawers physically cannot open. Full comparison in ottoman vs divan.

How much do divan drawers hold?

Not usually — the drawer housings are built into the base, so the configuration is fixed at purchase.

Drawers for daily access; ottoman for maximum volume and tight rooms.
