How to Measure Your Bedroom for a New Bed: The 4-Step UK Guide

How to measure your bedroom for a new bed: measure the room's usable length and width, subtract fixed furniture and door swings, and keep at least 60cm of walkway on every open side of the bed. Ten minutes with a tape measure prevents the two most common (and most expensive) bed-buying mistakes: a frame that dominates the room, or one that never makes it up the stairs.

Table of contents

Step 1 — Measure the room

Measure wall to wall at floor level (skirting boards steal a couple of centimetres). Mark on a quick sketch: door position and swing arc, windows and radiators, built-in wardrobes, and sockets. The bed can't block any of them.

Step 2 — Apply the clearance rules

  • 60cm walkway on each open side of the bed — the minimum to walk and make the bed comfortably.
  • Door swing: a standard UK internal door needs ~76cm of clear arc.
  • Drawers and wardrobes: allow their full open depth (usually 45–60cm) in front of them.

Then check the maths against frame sizes — a bed frame runs roughly 10–15cm larger than its mattress size in each direction. All mattress dimensions are in our UK bed sizes guide.

Step 3 — Check the delivery route

Measure the narrowest points between your front door and the bedroom: hallway width, stair width and any turns, banister clearance, and the bedroom door itself. Our frames arrive flat-packed precisely to make this easier — the largest single panel is typically the headboard, so check its dimensions on the product page against your tightest turn.

Step 4 — Extra checks for storage beds

End-lift ottoman: the platform opens toward the foot of the bed — keep that zone clear of furniture. Side-lift: the opening edge needs the clear space instead; better for narrow rooms (full comparison: side-lift vs end-lift). Ceiling slope: in loft rooms, confirm the platform's opening arc clears the slope.

Frequently asked questions

How much space do you need around a bed?
At least 60cm of clear walkway on every open side, plus the full swing of doors and drawers.

Will a king size bed fit in my room?
A king frame needs roughly 160×215cm of floor. Add 60cm walkways and you want a room at least ~2.8m wide on the bed wall.

What if my staircase is narrow?
Flat-packed frames like ours pass where assembled beds can't — check the largest panel (usually the headboard) against your tightest point before ordering.
