Choosing a Mattress for an Ottoman Bed: What Actually Matters

Any standard UK-size mattress works on an ottoman bed — there is no special 'ottoman mattress'. But because the mattress rides on the lifting platform, its weight and fit affect how easily the bed opens and closes. Three things matter: weight, exact size match, and the support type that suits you.

1. Weight: the gas lift's best friend or enemy

Gas pistons are rated for a range of platform loads. A medium-weight mattress keeps opening light and closing controlled. Very heavy mattresses (dense hybrids, some deep memory-foam models) make lifting noticeably harder; ultra-light mattresses can make the platform feel eager to rise. Our pocket sprung and open coil designs sit comfortably in the ideal range for our frames.

2. Size: match the frame exactly

An undersized mattress slides on the platform as it tilts; an oversized one fouls the frame when closing. Buy the same UK size as the bed — dimensions for every size are in our UK sizes guide.

3. Support type: choose for your sleep, not the frame

Pocket sprung — independent springs contour to your body and limit partner disturbance; our Pocket Master 1000 and 2000 are the range's all-rounders. Orthopaedic — firmer support for back pain and back/front sleepers. Memory-topped open coil — budget-friendly comfort for guest rooms. Pillow top — plusher surface feel over sprung support. We compare spring and foam feel fully in pocket sprung vs memory foam.

Common questions

Does the mattress need fixing down? No — the platform's lip and the mattress's weight keep it in place through normal opening.

Can I use my existing mattress? Yes, if it's the right size and in good condition. A sagging mattress will sag on any frame.

How thick should it be? Most 20–30cm mattresses are ideal. Extremely thick mattresses can overhang the headboard line visually but won't affect the mechanism.

Pair your frame from our ottoman collection with the right support from the mattress range — both handcrafted in West Yorkshire with free UK delivery.
